NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR GASTRIC BYPASS, SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY AND GASTRIC BANDING
Gastric Bypass, Lap Band, Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery does not cure obesity. It will cause you to lose weight at first, but at some point, your success will depend of your lifestyle choices. to help you reach your goals:
- Keep a food journal. Record everything you eat and bring this in to your next appointment.
- Take vitamins, minerals supplements daily.(Start at least 2 weeks before surgery)
- Eat 6 small meals per day. Do not skip meals-this may slow down your metabolism and lead to overeating later (Start at least 2 weeks before surgery)
- No alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages.
- Learn to sip liquids. No chugging. No straws.
- Drink liquids between meals not with the meals (do not drink 30 mins before a meal and wait 30 mins after a meal).
- Eat meals slowly. Take 20-30 minutes to eat a meal.
- Pay attention to what you eat. Do not read or watch TV during your meal.
- Listen to your stomach-once you are satisfied stop eating and do not try to finish everything. Stop before you feel full. Do not over eat.
- Wait at least 1 hour after you eat before you lie down.
- Read your food labels. Reading food labels can help you make healthy food choices.
- Exercise 3-5 times per week Start Slow. Choose an activity that you enjoy !!
- Stay motivated. . .Believe that you can meet your goals and stick to your plan.
PREPARING FOR SURGERYT
- The first few months after surgery it is important to follow the diet recommendations very carefully. The diets are separated into steps to allow you to heal and prevent excessive vomiting or obstructions. These diets are only recommended for patients who have undergone Gastric Bypass, Banding, or Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery.
- STEP I Clear Liquids- (3-5 days)
- STEP II Full Liquids- (2 weeks) – (Start Vitamins / Mineral and Protein)
- STEP III Pureed or blended – (4 weeks)
- STEP IV Very soft solid – (4 weeks)
- STEP V Regular
Protein
Protein is important for everyone, but it is especially important for those who have had gastric bypass, lap band, and sleeve gastrectomy surgery. protein is necessary for proponer healing. it is also important for keeping muscle mass during weight loss. Not enough protein in your diet results in poor healing, hair loss and an overall decrease in energy.
Because you will be smaller amounts, it is important to choose foods that are high in protein. Meat and dairy foods are high in protein. Try to include at least one serving from one of these groups at each meal and snack. Your protein needs are determined by your body weight. Food labels will provide the protein content of most foods.
