Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a technique that allows view of the pelvic-abdominal cavity with the help of an optical lens. Through an optical fiber light is transmitted to illuminate the cavity, while the images of the interior is observed with a camera connected to the same lens.

The same method allows surgical interventions. It is also considered a minimally invasive surgery whose objective is to cure or correct diseases. The device used is called a laparoscopic tower and enters the body through a small incision (usually between 0.5 and 1.5 centimeters).

Practically any abdominal and pelvic surgery can be performed through this technique, among some of them we have cholecystectomies (gallbladder surgery), appendectomies, intestinal resections, surgical sterilizations and pancreatectomies, hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery and others.

Some advantages of laparoscopic surgery compared to traditional open surgery are smaller incisions that result smaller scars, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays.
